 WHAT IS SURROGACY?

Many couples fail to have children even after undergoing treatment options like IUI, IVF, ICSI etc. This may be due to an unhealthy uterus which doesn't offer a favorable environment for the fetus to grow in, despite the transfer of healthy embryos. In such conditions, the biological parents can opt to get their own embryo transferred to a woman with a healthy uterus, ensuring the healthy growth of the fetus. In all ways, the child belongs to the couple; the woman who agrees to nourish the child and carry the fetus for 9 months becomes the surrogate mother, so that the couple can have a baby.

WHO NEEDS SURROGACY?

Women who suffer abnormalities like fibroid, uterine abnormalities, endometriosis, endometrial adhesions, congenital absence of uterus, pelvic infections destroying the pelvis, repeated abortions and contra medicating for a pregnancy can go for surrogacy. Women with medical history such as  hysterectomy, renal surgery, cardiac/liver or any other major problems which stops them from conceiving can opt for surrogacy.

Women who cannot takeout  time  from a demanding career are also considering surrogacy. With the rapid rise of career oriented thinking; this may become a common cause in the future. Male infertility associated with female problems like in the case of repeated ICSI failures can go for surrogacy. Gay couples or single men who want to have children are also choosing surrogacy.

IS SURROGACY LEGAL IN INDIA?
Although banned in many countries like USA and European countries, there are no such laws against surrogacy in India.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR   SURROGACY?

Once surrogacy is decided by the couple, they need to undergo detailed counseling regarding all options after which a medical screening will be conducted. After being thoroughly screened, legal papers are signed by all parties concerned, the couple and the surrogate mother. The month for treatment for IVF is decided and posted as well. Both are synchronized for treatments in their period cycle. IVF or ICSI is performed and many surrogates prefers to stay in hospital  till delivery. The surrogate is delivered by whichever mode needed and babies' birth is registered under name of biological parents. The baby is handed over to couple immediately after birth.
