Infertility& Surrogacy Specialist at Gift IVF Centre

NACE
The NACE test is a non-invasive prenatal test. To perform the test, all that’s needed is a small sample of blood just like for any other routine blood test.

The NACE test compares foetal DNA with the mother’s DNA to detect abnormalities .

During pregnancy, a baby’s DNA mixes with its mother’s blood DNA. Now it possible to detect foetal DNA in the mother’s blood and screen genetic data of the baby’s chromosomes.

Normal baby after repeated Down's syndrome with NACE

Normal Baby after Repeated Downs syndrome

H/o repeated Down's syndrome in PCOS patient .

After a newborn death of Downs baby and another miscarriage of Downs foetus , the couple were desperate to have a normal child . Patient had PCOS , laparoscopic ovarian drilling was done . Subsequent Pregnancy was confirmed normal with genetic test of the baby at 9 weeks by NACE test , which is new technology ,by taking maternal blood to isolate foetal DNA .This helped in avoiding invasive tests like amniocentesis  and also in early detection .

Now it possible to detect foetal DNA in the mother’s blood and screen genetic data regarding the baby’s chromosomes.

Story of two women and surrogacy

This is the story of just two women. They are among the thousands who visit us:

When 43 year old Mrs Kiran came to see me, she did not cry or smile. Her face looked ghostly. She was weary from visiting around 30 infertility centres for treatments in the last 23 years. There was not a single month in the calendar when she didn't try to be a mother. It all began after the first year of her marriage. Initially she underwent scans and took medicines. Later it progressed to intra uterine inseminations (IUI). After a year of IUI marked by painful periods, her husband felt pity for her and both started on a mix of ayurveda, alternate medicine and homeopathy, all in vain. Then they left to Mumbai fr IVF treatment. While she dreamt about a baby, her husband thought about the medical expenses. Even after 3 IVFs it did not work. He worked hard to expand his business, sold all the disposable property they had and managed to arrange the finance for ICSI treatment which failed again. To make matters worse, she developed fibroids in the uterus which caused pain and heavy bleeding. She underwent laparoscopy for the fibroid removal. The doctors were sure that the second ICSI will be successful, as the uterus was lighter now. But, the surgery had left all the organs in her pelvis sticking like a gum, and as if in a vengeance, more fibroids appeared in her next scan. Another surgery followed.

Amidst  this trauma, when I told them I could help, they were speechless and they agreed for surrogacy. The eggs were retrieved from her and fertilized with her husband's sperm in the IVF lab and subsequently shifted to the surrogate mother's womb. They could not believe their eyes when I first showed them the images of 2 tiny pregnancies in the surrogate mother. I will never forget their faces when I handed over the twin babies to them. More than being a doctor, I felt like a humble human being at that moment.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
When  I met Suman, she was shattered without any hope or aspiration.  Beautiful, 30 year old Suman has been married for 12 years with 4 children. Initially, she and her husband were very happy together . After the birth of their first child, her husband became an alcoholic. He started drinking heavily and lost his job. She was subject to domestic violence and in desperation attempted suicide.  A nun at the nearby convent gave her hope. She advised her to help another women and herself by becoming a surrogate. Surprisingly, her husband agreed to this as a noble means of earning. Luckily she conceived in the first attempt of embryo transfer after IVF and had a smooth pregnancy till the end of the term. She opted to stay in the hospital for  9 months. Good nourishment and rest restored her physical and mental health tremendously. She became cheerful and constantly kept in touch with her children who were under the nun’s care. Their financial condition improved and her husband reformed. With the nun’s help, she booked a small house in a small  plot, which she bought later. She was more than happy to hand over the baby to the biological parents and for the first time in her life felt she had done a worthy deed. She was also able to save some money for her children’s education. She found a job as care taker in the convent nursery school and is presently leading a happy life with her family.

Dr. Anita Mani at surrogacy conference Melbourne 2014

Melbourne meeting
Presentation in world surrogacy conference in Melbourne on 24 th  and 25 th of May 2014 , by Dr . Anita mani and Dr. S. Mani  from GIFT , Cochin made India widely popular as a hub for international surrogacy .

It was indeed a proud moment for Dr. Anita  to be sitting in the panel with the greats of proffesor Shapiro (who was first in world to develop blastocyst culture from California ), Dr.Guy Ringler ( Las Vegas research center ) and interviewed by prof. Martyn ( known as grandfather of Australian fertility )

Our unique policies, which  could not be competed by even the best Centers in the world , won lots of accolades . At gift center , only single embryo is transferred to avoid the complications of multiple pregnancy like premature deliveries and other  maternal and fetal complications . This was in contrast to the 3 to 6 embryo transfer practiced by other Centers in India and around the globe .

The policy of  day 5 blastocyst transfer for all cases, is a huge advancement and helps in selecting the best embryo . Very few Centers in the world are able to do blastocyst culture routinely for every single patient.

As we offer good success with frozen embryo transfer, many Australian couples decided to ship their frozen embryos from Australia to South India after the meeting . Surrogate mothers are provided with excellent facilities in the form of accommodation and nutritious diet , with 24 hour medical care and good remuneration .

The unbiased interview ( by translator) of around 20 pregnant surrogate mothers of foreign couples at GIFT was shown in Melbourne conference and  was appreciated by the audience which consisted doctors , lawyers , facilitators , research fellows ,ethic committee members  and intended parents from Australia, America , U.k. and Thailand .

Transparency and  honesty  is making GIFT Center stand apart from other Indian clinics , as the surrogates are allowed to meet the biological parents and they even Skype them regularly .

World class Medical facilities for a lower price of around 20 to 30 thousand US dollars is making our center attractive for the world , in comparison to American and Australian Centers , where they charges are around 200 to 300 thousand  us dollars per surrogacy .

The fact is that Kerala has a Neonatal mortality rate of 7 / 1000  which is comparable with western countries  and has  100 % literacy rate .
